BASIC TALKS ~ Angelina Foster ~ February 2024
1pm, 9/2/2024
The Hugh Lane Gallery
Basic Space is delighted to present Angelina Foster for our February BASIC TALK - 1pm on Friday the 9th of February 2024 at Hugh Lane Gallery.
Angelina Foster is a socially engaged eco-artist from Kildare. She founded Blueway Art Studio in Narraghmore, Co Kildare, a small village with a big sustainable welcome. Her practice is based on collaboration with communities who reimagine ways to communicate climate and system changes through creativity. The cycle of reciprocity in sustainable art-making is at the core of her work. Angelina regularly works with other artists to fulfil participatory projects who share the values of the UNESCO endorsed Earth Charter and use its principals as a guide.
She has a huge interest in heritage and the role art, particularly print, plays in activism and exploration through the centuries. In times of crisis, whether war or climate, women and children are most affected. She hosts workshops which celebrate both women in print and the impact of the letterpress on suffragism.
Through Blueway Art Studio, she engages in creative and sustainable tourism highlighting the role creativity plays in economic development, rural regeneration. Community arts projects and events harness the sensory and emotional power of the arts, cutting across differences in ages, backgrounds, and experiences to generate meaningful connections which also foster respect for the artist.
Her project “Brigid’s Circles – Creative Responses to the Circular Economy” was a collaboration with Monasterevin Sustainable Energy Community and Kilcock Community Gardens. This was an intergenerational project which engaged an age range of 3 – 82 years. It was selected for Earth Rising in IMMA 2023.
“A Little Book of Brigid” (funded by Brigid 1500, 2024), celebrates Brigid as the female force in ordinary lives, past and present. The collection of poems and prints merges two of Brigid’s patronages: printers and poets. It is completely handprinted through letterpress and screen-printing.
Recipient of grants and awards including from Arts Council Ireland, Creative Ireland, Failte Ireland, Business to Arts. Angelina is a member of numerous art organisations in Ireland and Britain, including Mná na nEalaín and Limerick Printmakers.
