Basic Space is delighted to present Hina Khan for our December BASIC TALK - 1pm on Friday the 8th of December 2023 ONLINE.

Born in Pakistan in 1980, Hina Khan completed an MFA from FJWU (Fatima Jinnah Women University) in 2003, with Miniature Painting as her Major. She uses a mixture of traditional and innovative techniques in her Miniatures. She has chosen to practice at this scale due to the intricacy and delicacy of the brush work, which lends itself to its unique identity. Most of Khan’s work is a mixture of traditional and contemporary miniatures. Her work often portrays social issues, immigration and humanitarian crises like prostitution, gender discrimination, restrictions, trauma, child abuse and killing. Her work is a constant search for the best way to interpret these themes and express her own ideologies through symbolism, shifting her practice towards installation, videos, 3D works. Khan aims to create dialogue through her works. Her art is reflection of inner connection, immigration, and her connection with nomadic artists relationship with land.

“Migration is deeply rooted in my blood. I have carried two cultures, one where I was born and the other, this culture, where I am trying to re-root myself. Sometimes a situation is not in our control, but life always takes us on different voyages.”

This journey lent itself to Khan’s growth in personality and experimentation, and as a result, has allowed her to evolve and further her practice. Before coming to Ireland, Khan participated in a number of group shows in Pakistan from 2002-2011. Since coming to Ireland in 2015, she has participated in a number of exhibitions nationally, including in Dublin, Laois, Mayo, and Cork, with solo shows at the Ballina Arts Centre and Stradbally Arthouse. Khan has been awarded residencies with Fire Station Artists’ Studios, Create Ireland, West Cork Art Centre & Cow House Studio. She is a recipient of several awards including from Arts Council Ireland & Create Ireland, while also having pieces in the Arts Council’s permanent collection. Her most recent solo show ‘No Serhadain’ took place in May 2022 in LHQ Gallery, Cork.
