BS/AR 2020 ~ Conor Nolan
March 2020
Basic Space is delighted to announce Conor Nolan as the recipient of the 2020 Basic Space Artist Residency (BS/AR), in partnership with VOID, Saskatoon, Canada.
Conor Nolan is an Irish artist currently based in Dublin. Conor creates work in a number of areas such as illustration, design and printmaking, typically consisting of bold shapes and bright, limited colour palettes, inspired by the aesthetics of screen printing and risograph printing. Conor’s work combines the tactile aesthetics of his chosen printmaking methods and the accessible visual language of illustration to bring attention to the otherwise banal and mundane, capturing life and connection in the everyday, and bringing these topics out in the form of prints, zines, art books and more. Much of this process is concerned with the relationship between images and text, in the context of creating visual narratives, and embracing the art of storytelling.
Conor will will get access to VOID’s print facilities, and a small studio space to develop work, with support from Basic Space and VOID for the month of March 2020.
VOID is a Non-profit screen print and risograph studio founded in 2012 and located in Saskatoon, Canada/Treaty 6. They support local artists and the local arts community through training, provision of space and equipment, and community-outreach programming.
The BS/AR is part of a multi-site programme of exhibitions, residencies and public programmes looking at institutional attitudes, community spaces and education. It is a continuation of Basic Space’s commitment to emerging artists through the allocation of residency opportunities, encouraging risk-taking and experimental attitudes in the production and dissemination of new work. As part of our representative programme policy, we would like to particularly encourage applications by disabled, LGBTQ+ and BAME artists.
