Basic Space is delighted to present Myrid Carten for our July BASIC TALK.
Originally from Donegal, Myrid studied at Goldsmiths University of London and Central Saint Martin's UAL. The BBC commissioned and broadcast her work and she has received funding from BFI and NI Screen. Her work has screened internationally. Myrid is currently in early production on feature experimental documentary ‘No Place Like Home’ supported by Screen Ireland production funding and DocsIE Pitch Award 2019. The film was selected for IDFA Forum 2021.
Her work is in The Arts Council of Ireland Collection and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland Collection. Myrid = phonetically pronunciation of Gortahork meets Derry bastardization of Mairead.
Recent exhibitions: Preta (Hungry Ghost), Mother’s Tank Station, Dublin (2022). My Body is an Exhibition, Sadler’s Wells London (2021). The Yalta Game, RCC Donegal (2020), Urgencies, selected by Willie Doherty, CCA Derry (2019).
Recent residencies: ISCP NYC 2020-21, Hospitalfield Scotland 2020-2021, Artlink Dunree Ireland 2020 and British Council’s and ACNI International artist residency in India 2017-18.
Recent awards: TBG&S Project Studio Award 2018-19, Fire Station Artists Studio Digital Media Award 2018, and the Arts Council of Ireland’s Next Generation Artist Award 2018-19, aemi Commission Award 2021.
Statement: Using documentary and fiction, and often a playful combination of both, Myrid’s work interrogates both the struggle for intimacy and the ways we are compromised by our pasts. She explores, with generous ruthlessness, the universal desire to be both known and hidden, and the costs involved in both of these complicated commitments.

BASIC TALKS is a series of talks with leading contemporary practitioners, taking place at The Hugh Lane on the second Friday of every month. Curated by Basic Space in partnership with The Hugh Lane, BASIC TALKS is a platform for lectures, workshops, presentations, and performances. Speakers include artists, curators, writers, and critics who will generate discourse on producing, framing and exhibiting art. BASIC TALKS is a collaboration between Basic Space and The Hugh Lane, exploring alternatives in the dissemination of contemporary art and its discourses.
