Kevin Gaffney will discuss his recent films and screen 'The mirror is dark and inky', where daily life in Iran is interrupted by a whale living in a bathtub.

Kevin Gaffney a visual artist working in film. His work explores the construction, projection and manipulation of identity. The scripts he writes are narrated or spoken as dialogue in the films, aiming to reveal the psychological landscapes that the characters inhabit.

He graduated BA Fine Art from the Dublin Institute of Technology in 2008, and the Royal College of Art in London with an MA in Photography & Moving Image in 2011. In 2014 Gaffney was an UNESCO-Aschberg laureate artist in residence at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Seoul and in 2015 received the Kooshk Artist Residency Award in Tehran. In 2015 he was awarded the first Sky Academy Arts Scholarship for an Irish artist and his work became part of IMMA’s collection. A monograph of his work, 'Unseen by my Open Eyes', has just been published by Black Dog in London, featuring images and scripts from four of his recent films made in Ireland, Iran, South Korea and Taiwan. He is currently on residency at Fire Station Artist’s Studios.

BASIC TALKS is a series of talks with leading contemporary practitioners, taking place at The Hugh Lane on the second Friday of every month. Curated by Basic Space in partnership with The Hugh Lane, BASIC TALKS is an open platform for lectures, workshops, presentations and performances. Speakers will include artists, curators, writers and critics who will generate discourse on producing, framing and exhibiting art. BASIC TALKS is a collaboration between Basic Space and The Hugh Lane, exploring alternatives in the dissemination of contemporary art and its discourses.
